The Bohinj tourist destination has managed to implement some activities for traffic calming in the past few years. The Bohinj Guest Card plays an important role in informing the local community on the purposes in the field of traffic calming as well as the promotion of alternative forms of nature-friendly mobility. The card enables guests who spend at least two nights in Bohinj free parking, free bus rides in Bohinj and discounts for the use of other means of public transport. These are the Ski Bus and Bohinj Ski Train during the winter which reduce the traffic burden caused by visitors who come to the Vogel Ski Centre. We have introduced additional bus rides during the summer season (Hop-on Hop-off bus to the Pokljuka, bus that drives along the Upper Bohinj valley and to the Savica Waterfall), we regularly collaborate with the Slovenian Railways and promote the use of trains. In collaboration with CIPRA and other destinations, we collaborate each year at the implementation of the project Timetables in the Alps. We have marked 22 hiking trails in the valley within the Hiking Trails in Boh inj project. We have also purchased 10 additional electrical bicycles. Recently, the new cycling route from Bohinjska Bistrica to Srednja vas was built in Bohinj, it will be extended to the village of Češnjica in 2016, which will conclude the route around Bohinj. We have also built a bridge in the Danica Campsite, which directly connected Bohinjska Bistrica with the cycling route, and we have also set up a temporary car park before the village where Lake Bohinj is located. A free shuttle bus also drove visitors from the car park to the lake. In 2016 we will provide 2 new bike rental places (park&bike) within the scope of the Park&Explore Nature! Project (FM EGP 2009-2014), we will also design, implement and establish the Intelligent Transport System that will enable the provision of information and promotion of soft mobility. Links:

The promotion of the use of public transport, cycling and hiking impacts the quality of air in the area. Car parks will be distanced from the ecologically sensitive lake basin, thus we will prevent the additional burden on the environment caused by individual motor traffic. It will also led to better living condition (noise, pollution) for local people and will have positive impact on local economy specially on tourism.

The increased rate of use of the Bohinj Guest Card is quite inspiring. The tendency to use buses, bicycles or just walk around Bohinj to explore it, is increasing, since visitors leave their cars at their hosts (hotels, campsites, apartments). Visitors also often decide to visit neighbouring destinations (Bled, Soča valley) by train and bus. It is quite inspiring that during the season, many single-day visitors park their cars 5 km before the lake and decide to arrive to their destination by bike on the cycling route.
In 2009 we have come to an idea of a unique cleaning campaign in Bohinj. In order to preserve this green tourist destination, we, together with local providers decided to organise an event we named Green Weekend in Bohinj. We managed to “bring on board” tourism providers in Bohinj, Slovenian Railways and Bus Company Alpetour. The idea was as follows: Active participants that come to Bohinj by public transport means, help us clean environment can spend free night in one of the partner hotels and apartments.
Regarding the success we understood that “Green Weekend” is a superb example of a successful connection between tourist services providers on a local and wider destination level. The protection of the environment has a tradition in Slovenian history, since we have an invaluable, collective motivation and concern for sustainable development. The initiative of Bohinj has been accepted and supported with open arms. Green Weekend in Bohinj demonstrates that Bohinj as a tourist destination is taking small but certain steps to realise the postulates of sustainable development and sets an admirable example on the international level of tourism development.
During the winter, we offer a low-price Bohinj SKI Train package that includes transport by train, bus, a ski pass and lunch at Vogel Ski Centre. In this way, skiers avoid long queues and the parking problem on a spatially quite limited area.

By constantly informing (leaflets for tourists, articles in local newspapers for locals) and the promotion of low-cost rides by public transport (in some cases even free rides), we aim to raise the awareness of the significance of sustainable mobility and enhance the attraction of the region. The use of public transport has raised over last 5 years working on the project. On the other hand, community has begun to understand more and more how important slow mobility is when developing quality tourist products.

Slow mobility is the heart of the touristic offers in Western Pomerian River District. It fits to the unique landscape from the Ice Age. To install offer several possibilitys of slow mobility we used our network from local buisiness and partners.
It begans with trips by canoe from half-day up to a seven-day-trip. We organized a collective transport to the start of the trips. Some times later we started with solarpowered boats up to 12 people. In this way we catched also turists who never would go by canoe.
In a next step we installed pedelecs (pedal electric cycle) to hire for individuals and to integrate these pedelecs in our organized trips, for instance a canoe-bike-trip. In springtime we promoted on a special day e-cars and are hopefull to rent out some of them to next year. The first electric garages we have already in our destination.

We need no fossil fuels for all these activities. To charge the pedelecs and cars we use only 100 % regenerative power.
On the other hand we encourage people in thinking about the balance between their behavior and the results for the nature.

We began with this way in slow mobility in 2005. Every year the number of guests is increasing because of the consistent way with slow mobility.

There is a big interest of the tourists and local people to try for exemple solar powered boats since the slow mobility offers exist Before this people only hired boats with gazoline-engines. Now they realize the advantages of this silence and comfortable way to go by boat. And also local people with their own boats begin to thinking about changing to electric engines.
The pedelecs are perfect for people who have not more so many power to go by a normal bike. Normally they stopped go by bike, but with this offer they stay in touch with the nature by this active way.

We have created a QR Code Discovery Tour in the city. At first, the idea was to offer individual visitors the possibility of discovering Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve in a complete interactive and ludic manner.
A sign is fixed in front of several sites and bear one or two QR Codes which can be scanned with a smartphone or tablet. The main points of interest in the municipal territory are put in evidence and presented in an interactive and ludic way notably thanks to brief audio descriptions, photos and video excerpts. Rather than a recommended itinerary, a general map indicating the points of interest enable visitors to select the places of their choice and therefore create a personalized route. The visitor can easily get from one point to another thanks to the map and an itinerary function working with the geo-localization system.
Overall the aim is to reinforce our image of a modern, university and dynamic town by using new technologies.

Signs are solidly placed on the wall, on a stake or a rock in order to maintain visibility and conserve the scenery and environment, i.e. : no sign is fixed on trees.
Ecological concepts were used in different ways :

  • Name of places were printed on stickers which can be replaced if need to be so that the actual signs do not have to be replaced.

  • The folder with the route map is printed on recycled paper

The route encourages the mobility of pedestrians and cyclists in the entire town, also thanks to the realization of cycle paths going on and especially since the city had received the label “Ville Cyclable” (Cycling city) two years ago wich help the city in this project.

  • 28 signs indicating the name of the place, logos and one or two QR Codes

  • A web interface in 3 languages (French, Dutch and English) contain an audio description, photos, videos, further information and a ludic part

A sign of 20 x 20 cm at each point of interest is fixed at a height of 1m50. On each sign the name of the place and a QR Code sends you to the web interface. These interfaces offer visitors a content that can be easily updated.

The information can be easily used and understood by all everyone. It is aimed at persons looking for basic, or more complete details, whether it is about the town in general or a particular place. It is visible to PMR thanks to the height of the signs, for sight impaired persons by audio description, and for families, who will be able to take advantage of the educational aspect to be developed in 2016. The content is visible in an amenable way, this means adaptable to different tools and platforms on the web.

In addition, the Office du Tourisme-Inforville can provide visitors, who are not equipped with mobile devices, with two tablets for rent. The interface does not necessitate downloading a specific application of the route, nor any charge (the classic QR Code reader application, free of charge, or already installed on the mobile). All the information is available on our website so it can be viewed on site, or at home.
In a not too distant future, the touristic areas in the town will enable visitors free access to WIFI.

    • A possibility to visit Louvain-la-Neuve as an individual visitor. Indeed, there wasn’t any offer for individual publics, but only for groups of at least 15 persons.

    • A discovery of the town at one’s own rhythm.

    • Increased circulation around the town thanks to the repartition of the signs.
      A better flow of tourists.

    • Thanks to our selection of places of interest, the visitor who did not necessarily previously see any interest to visit Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve, find that there is a lot to be seen in the town.

    • Spark awareness of the younger generation on cultural and touristic aspects of the town thanks to the use of new technologies.

    • Enables to develop the independence of the tourists.

Expected impact for the town :

  • Increase the frequency of enquiries at the Office du Tourisme-Inforville whilst at the same time increase sales in the souvenir shop.

  • Increase the use of the frequency of the website

  • Increase the attractiveness of the University.

  • Increase the impact on local economy.
